A weekend that will be remembered for what happened in the stands at Old Trafford as much as on the pitch. Here are the results that mattered, and an honest look at how our model did.

Man Utd 0–3 Bournemouth: Old Trafford turns on the owners

Bournemouth won 3–0 at Old Trafford on Sunday, with goals from Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson. United are now 16th with seven points from eight games, and eight matches without a win, their worst run since 2015–16.

The anger was aimed above the team. Chants against the Glazer family and Sir Jim Ratcliffe started early, and director of football Jason Wilcox, who many fans blame for recent recruitment, was jeered during the game and as he left the stadium. Supporters backed manager Michael Carrick in song, but he could not say afterwards whether he would still be in charge for the trip to Chelsea (BBC Sport via Yahoo).

Our call: we had both teams to score at 63%. Bournemouth scored three and United none, so that one missed. We did have Bournemouth creating chances at a side that had drawn four of its last five, but nobody's numbers had United this flat.

Aston Villa 2–1 Man City

City lost 2–1 at Villa Park on Saturday.

Liverpool 2–0 Brighton

Brighton arrived at Anfield third and in form, and our model rated them the better attacking side, with expected goals of 2.3 to Liverpool's 1.2. Liverpool won 2–0. Our pick was over 2.5 goals at 64%, which missed with only two goals, and our numbers clearly underrated Liverpool at home here.

Barcelona 1–2 Real Madrid: a statement win for Mourinho

A big result for José Mourinho, back for a second spell in charge this season. Real Madrid went to the Camp Nou third in the table, with Barcelona top after five straight wins, and came away with a 2–1 win that cuts the gap to their rivals by three points. Winning the first Clásico of his return, away from home, is exactly the kind of result that builds belief (theScore).

Our model had Barcelona to win at 60% at a best price of 1.70: Barcelona came in on five straight wins with the better expected goals, 2.7 to 1.3. A 60% pick still loses four times in ten, and this was one of them.

The rest of the Premier League weekend

  • Arsenal 2–0 Everton
  • Coventry 0–1 Fulham
  • Crystal Palace 0–2 Newcastle
  • Hull 1–1 Brentford
  • Sunderland 0–0 Leeds

How our Sunday picks did

From our Sunday Premier League preview, only one of four picks came in: both teams to score in Hull v Brentford (1–1). Liverpool v Brighton (over 2.5), Man Utd v Bournemouth and Crystal Palace v Newcastle (both teams to score) all missed. Across the wider weekend the model did better, and Cortex looks back at every result in Cortex's Diary.
